Már a legelején fontos tisztázni, hogy ez a cikk elsősorban a fordítástudomány bibliográfiáival foglalkozik, azaz a fordítással és tolmácsolással foglalkozó tudományos és egyetemi kiadványokat rendszerező bibliográfiákkal. A fordítók közössége a tudományos bibliográfiák mellett természetesen a lefordított művekről is készít bibliográfiákat. A leghíresebb az UNESCO Index Translationum nevű adatbázisa (2011-es adat, bár maga az adatbázis már 1932-ben létrejött).
