Взаємовідносини між перекладом і лінгвістикою не завжди були гармонійними; зокрема, перекладознавці звинувачують лінгвістів у помилковому тлумаченні перекладу як « простого процесу транскодування » (Snell-Hornby 1988: 3) та в одержимості ідеєю еквівалентності, зміст якої варіюється, відповідно до варіацій відповідних термінів у різних мовах.
