Le manque de précision de l’expression « traduction littéraire » lui permet d’englober la traduction « non littéraire » de textes « littéraires » (par exemple la traduction littérale d’un poème à des fins pédagogiques ou philologiques) ainsi que la traduction « littéraire » de textes « non littéraires » (par exemple les textes religieux). Pourtant, dans la plupart des cas, l’expression se réfère à des traductions « littéraires » extraites de textes des originaux « littéraires », où on s’attend à ce que les traducteurs préservent ou recréent d’une façon ou d’une autre les intentions ou effets esthétiques qui peuvent être perçus dans le texte source. Il convient toutefois de rappeler que le statut des textes en tant que textes « littéraires », voire en tant que « traductions », est en fin de compte une question de conventions, de normes et de fonctions de communication, autant qu’un reflet des caractéristiques intrinsèques du texte (voir Literary Studies and Translation Studies ).
