Дискусія щодо поняття невидимості (непомітності) (invisibility) перекладача, розпочата Лоренсом Венуті (Venuti 1994), та підхоплена Деніелем Сімеоні у його впливовій статті щодо габітусу (habitus) перекладача (Simeoni 1998), традиційно протиставляється відносно високій помітності (visibility) авторів літературних творів або розглядається як тло літератури та «надприродної» аури (національного) автора-творця. Хоча значимість ролі, яку відіграє перекладач в ознайомленні читача-носія іншої культури з творами іноземних авторів, сама по собі не викликає сумнівів, його переклади були і продовжують залишатись предметом широкого обговорення і навіть суперечок як в межах однієї культури, так і в кроскультурному вимірі упродовж усього історичного розвитку (див. Художній переклад (Literary translation); Літературознавство і перекладознавство (Literary Studies and Translation Studies)). Проте, дискусії щодо невидимості перекладача ймовірно мимоволі відвернули увагу від складніших стосунків між перекладачами та авторами, включаючи тонші й менш помітні розмежування внесків автора (див., зокрема, Davidson 2008) та перекладача (Toury 1995: 53), і, конкретніше, як таке розмежування може сприйматися або сприймається в різних культурах або в різні історичні періоди. Далі, слід також визначитися з відношенням до авторів праць в інших сферах (наприклад, у філософії чи соціальних науках) та до перекладачів цих творів.
