Tõlgendav tõlketeooria (interpretive theory of translation) on suure selgitusjõuga sidus konstruktsioon, mis põhineb praktilisel suulise ja kirjaliku tõlkimise kogemusel. See arenes aegamööda alates 1960ndate keskpaigast tingituna vajadusest saada rohkem teavet tõlkeprotsessi (suulise ja kirjaliku tõlke) kohta ja vastata nõuetele, mis on seotud suulise ja kirjaliku tõlke õpetamiseks vajalike oskustega.
