Keeleõpet või keele omandamist (1) peetakse küll tõlkimise ilmseks eelduseks, kuid nii lääne tõlkeuuringutes kui ka keelepedagoogikas on sageli siiski arutletud teemal, missugust rolli võib mängida tõlkimine keeleõppes ja keele omandamisel. Keeleõppe niinimetatud loomulikest meetoditest ja grammatika-tõlkest kaugenemise järel on Läänes (2) veel vaid üksikud keelepedagoogika eksperdid rääkinud tõlkimisest endiselt kui viljakast meetodist või abivahendist keeleõppes, seda eriti esimeses ja teises kooliastmes – ehkki paljude õpetajate arvates on see endiselt kasulik (vt Pym, Malmkjær & Plana 2013; Laviosa 2014).
