S’il est évident que l’apprentissage ou l’acquisition d’une langue constitue un prérequis à la pratique de la traduction, le rôle que la traduction pourrait jouer dans l’apprentissage et l’acquisition des langues fait débat dans le monde occidental aussi bien en traductologie qu’en didactique des langues (Leonardi, 2010; DGT, 2013, Laviosa 2014). Avec le rejet de la méthode grammaire-traduction par les partisans des méthodes dites « naturelles » d’enseignement et d’apprentissage des langues, très peu d’experts de la didactique des langues sont enclins à recommander l’usage de la traduction comme méthode ou comme aide pour l’enseignement des langues, en particulier aux niveaux primaires et secondaires du système éducatif, bien que de nombreux enseignants continuent de la trouver bénéfique. Par exemple, Harvey (1996: 46; notre traduction) décrit ainsi la situation en France:
