Onko hiphop-musiikki suullinen kirjallisuuden muoto? Ovatko uusklassiset ranskalaiset belles infidèles -malliset versiot käännöksiä vai tulisiko niitä pitää adaptaatioina (ks. Adaptation)? Yltävätkö esimerkiksi Polanskin vuoden 2005 Oliver Twist -filmiadaptaation portugalin- tai hollanninkieliset tekstitykset tasolle, jolla ne olisivat verrattavissa kaunokirjallisiin käännöksiin? Tämän artikkelin otsikossa toisiinsa liitetyt käsitteet, ’kirjallisuus’ ja ’kääntäminen’, ovat tunnetusti vaikeita määritellä. Vähän kuin Pirandellon Six Characters in Search of an Author -teoksessa, kirjallisuudentutkimuksen ja käännöstieteen alojen piirissä on omilla tavoillaan ja ajoittain samansuuntaisesti käytetty paljon vaivaa niiden olemassaolon oikeuttavien aiheiden etsimiseen ja rajaamiseen.
