Konekääntäminen (machine translation eli MT) tarkoittaa kääntämistä, jossa lähdekielisestä tekstistä tuotetaan kohdekielinen teksti siihen tarkoitetulla tietokoneohjelmalla. Syntynyttä kohdekielen tekstiä voidaan kutsua raakakäännökseksi. Tästä määritelmästä voisi helposti olettaa, että saatua kohdekielistä raakakäännöstä voitaisiin käyttää ammattikääntäjän kääntämän käännöksen tapaan. Ammattikääntäjän ja konekääntimen tuottamia lopputuotteita ei kuitenkaan voi täysin vertailla toisiinsa, vaikka konekääntämisellä ja ammattikääntäjien tekemällä kääntämisellä onkin samankaltainen tarkoitus (Sager 1994: 261).
