Зважаючи на те, що первинне значення терміна « переклад » у багатьох європейських мовах само по собі є метафорою (зазвичай пов’язаною з « перенесенням », « переведенням » або « перекладанням »), не дивно, що в багатьох культурах і в різні часи, описуючи процес перекладу, вдавалися до метафор. Власне, Райнер Ґульдин (Guldin 2010) вважає терміни « переклад » і « метафора » глибоко гомологічними (відповідними), вбачаючи в них переклад одне одного, а також метафору одне одного. Множинність метафоричних висловів на означення перекладу приголомшує різноманіттям: від дотепних фраз, таких як « les belles infidèles » (« красиві, але невірні », « зрадливі красуні ») і « traduttori, traditore » (перекладач-зрадник); простих і дуже поширених метафор, як-от « перекладач як місток між культурами » або « переклад як процес переливання старого вина в нові міхи »; позитивних метафор, до прикладу « правдиве засвідчення » або « алхімія »; негативних, скажімо, перекладач як « раб автора » або « переписувач »; пасивних метафор, як-от « дзеркало » або « провідник »; активних, таких як « маестро » або « шеф-кухар »; до більш ексцентричних, наприклад, перекладач як « джміль » або « сліпець, що описує слона ».
