Одразу після ідентифікації ділянок мозку, відповідальних за обробку продуктів мовлення, дослідження зосередились на нейрокогнітивних процесах, на яких ґрунтуються аудіювання/розуміння мовлення та його породження (див. статтю Когнітивні підходи (Cognitive approaches)). Усний переклад (Interpreting) є діяльністю, що включає обробку білінгвального мовлення у дуже специфічних умовах. Він привертає увагу дослідників з інших галузей, присвячених вивченню процесів обробки продуктів мовлення, особливо нейропсихологів і нейролінгвістів.
