Одним із способів визначення змісту поняття «текст оригіналу» є його концептуальне протиставлення поняттю «текст перекладу», аналізуючи це питання як онтологічну проблему, що стосується літературного твору. Якщо ж розглядати його у філософській площині, то до аналізу взаємовідношень між текстами оригіналу і перекладу можна підходити, спираючись на поняття «ідентичність» та, відповідно, на критерії однаковості. У цій статті, поняття «ідентичність» доповнюються поняттями «схожість» та «відмінність», як додатковими засоби дослідження текстів оригіналу і перекладу. Ми зосереджуємося на кількох підходах, аби проілюструвати розмаїття концепцій та їхні джерела у Західній традиції. Епістеміологічні припущення визначають поняття текстів оригіналу та перекладу і навіть релевантність постановки проблеми, самої по собі. Бінарні опозиції, як відправна точка зору, можуть не сприяти пост-структуралістському науковому мисленню в неессенціалістських термінах.
