번역과 관련된 최근의 경험적 연구를 살펴보면, ‘번역텍스트 주변에 위치하면서 번역을 설명해주는 텍스트(그림 텍스트 포함)’에 대해 관심이 높아지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 번역텍스트의 ‘문턱’(threshold)에 위치한 각종 텍스트를 “파라텍스트”(paratext)라고 부른다. 파라텍스트는 당초 문학분야에서 사용된 용어로, 번역을 포함한 각종 텍스트를 독자에게 소개해주는 텍스트로 정의되었다. 파라텍스트의 대표적 사례로는 책 제목(부제 포함), 필명, 서문(작가 이외의 사람이 쓴 서문 포함), 헌정사, 제명(epigraph), 중간제목, 주석, 에필로그 등이 있다(Macksey 1997: xviii). 파라텍스트는 (물리적으로) 책의 내부뿐만 아니라 외부에도 위치할 수 있고 독자와 책(텍스트)을 중개하는 도구이자 관습으로 해석된다. Gerard Genette는 파라텍스트라는 용어를 자신의 저서 Seuils (1987)에서 매우 상세하게 설명한다. Seuils는1997년 Paratexts: The Thresholds of Interpretation (Genette 1997)라는 제목으로 영역(英譯)되면서 그 내용이 번역학계에도 빠르게 확산된다. 그간 번역학자들은 번역텍스트의 수용(reception)에 지대한 영향을 미치는 파라텍스트적 요소를 탐구해왔다.
