Die Polysystemtheorie wurde in den frühen 1970ern von dem israelischen Wissenschaftler Itamar Even-Zohar zur Anwendung in der Sprach-, Literatur- und Translationswissenschaft entwickelt. In späteren Werken erweiterte sich ihre Anwendung auf die allgemeine Kulturtheorie.
