Itamar Even-Zohar, un académico israelí, desarrolló a principio de los años 70 la teoría de los polisistemas, para efectos del estudio del lenguaje, la literatura y la traducción. En sus últimos escritos Even-Zohar expandió esta teoría hacia una teoría general de la cultura.
