La retraduction (en tant que produit) désigne la deuxième traduction ou la traduction ultérieure d’un seul texte source vers une même langue cible. En règle générale, la retraduction (en tant que processus) est donc un phénomène qui se produit sur une période donnée; en réalité, cependant, il existe également des traductions simultanées ou quasi simultanées, ce qui rend le classement d’une version comme première traduction et d’une autre comme deuxième traduction parfois difficile, voire impossible. De même, certains chercheurs abordent aussi les traductions indirectes ou les traductions en relais dans le cadre de la retraduction, mais cet emploi est probablement plus trompeur qu’utile. Ainsi, dans le présent article, par retraduction, nous entendons plusieurs traductions vers une même langue.
