Teaduse tõlkimine on sama vana kui teadus ise. Kuna tõlkimisel on oma roll nii teadmiste kogumisel kui ka levitamisel, on see olnud teaduse arengule vähemalt sama oluline kui õpetamine ja teadustöö. Siinkohal peetakse „teaduse“ all silmas looduse, sealhulgas inimkeha, seega ka meditsiiniliste teadmiste ratsionaalset uurimist.
