Терміном« семіотика »позначається сукупність інтелектуальних студій, для яких знаки та знакові системи є головним об’єктом дослідження. Натепер не випрацювано об’єднувальної теорії семіотики, і дослідження виконуються в низці дисциплін. Петріллі та Понціо пропонують такий неповний список підходів:
