Lehelttõlge on üks põhilisi suulise tõlke vorme lisaks märkmetega või märkmeteta järeltõlkele (consecutive interpreting) ja tõlkekabiinis tehtavale tekstiga või tekstita sünkroontõlkele (simultaneous interpreting). Lehelttõlge on dihhotoomne protsess, mille käigus toimub keeltevaheline ülekanne lähtekeelest sihtkeelde ning kirjalikust vormist suulisse. Tõlk ei tööta tõlkekabiinis ja originaalesitust tavaliselt kuulata ei saa. Tõlgile antakse originaaltekst ootusega, et ta tõlgib selle sisu kohe ja sujuvalt ning suulisele esitusele sobiva kiirusega.
