Konverentsi sünkroontõlge (vt Simultaneous interpreting; Conference interpreting) on alati olnud tihedalt seotud tehnoloogiaga, sest see tekkis ja arenes tehnoloogiast sõltuva lahendusena üha suureneva arvu mitmekeelsete rahvusvaheliste kohtumiste jaoks. Esimene katse selle tõlkeviisiga tehti juba 1928. aastal Rahvusvahelise Tööorganisatsiooni (ILO) konverentsil, kuigi avalikkuse ette jõudis sünkroontõlge Nürnbergi protsesside ajal 1944–1945 (Gaiba 1998). Sellegipoolest kulus mitu aastat, enne kui said ületatud selle tõlkeviisiga seotud kahtlused, eelkõige mure tõlke täpsuse pärast. Esimene tõlkekool, mis asutati 1941. aastal Genfis, hakkas sünkroontõlget õpetama alles 1947. aastal.
