Переклад завжди асоціювався – прямо чи опосередковано – зі структурами, більшими за нього самого: переклад розглядають як чинник в обмінах між мовами, культурами та семіотичними просторами. Представники “маніпуляційної школи” перекладу та теорії полісистеми будували теорії перекладу за системно-теоретичним підходом під впливом парадигми літературного структуралізму та системних досліджень (російські формалісти, Празький лінгвістичний гурток, детальніше див. Полісистемна теорія та переклад (Polysystem theory and translation)). Натхненний системним мисленням теоретиків полісистемного підходу, Андре Лефевр розглядав переклад як форму переписування, яку практикують в літературній системі, що також є частиною комплексної системи систем, а саме – культури (1992; див. Культуроорієнтовані підходи (Cultural approaches)). На теорію Лефевра теж вплинули погляди німецького теоретика літературних систем Зігфрида Й. Шмідта. У своїх працях Шмідт застосував теорію соціальних систем Нікласа Лумана (див. нижче), згідно з якою люди не становлять частину соціальних систем. Однак Шмідт у своїй теорії літературних систем таки увів та представив участь людини (Schmidt 1998). Так само зробив Лефевр, який ствердив, що система має низку обмежень, проте перекладач-переписувач зберігає свободу і може або дотримуватися обмежень, або діяти всупереч. Обмеження накладаються із середини, і з-поза літературної системи. Поетика – це приклад внутрішніх обмежень; ідеологія – зовнішніх, які вводяться політичною чи релігійною владою. Естетичні та ідеологічні обмеження тісно пов’язані, й завдяки цьому літературна система поєднується з соціальною системою, в яку вона вбудована.
