Вивчення іноземних мов із застосуванням субтитрованих аудіовізуальних матеріалів є предметом наукових розвідок уже понад чотири десятиліття. Вчені загалом погоджуються, що субтитри полегшують розуміння мовних та культурних аспектів комунікації як у класі, так і поза ним. Дослідження Карен Прайс (Price 1983: 8), основоположниці цієї методики навчання, засвідчило, що перегляд телевізійних програм із одномовними субтитрами покращив володіння англійською мовою (як другою) та поглибив знання відповідної культури групи студентів із двадцяти різних країн із різним освітнім рівнем.
