翻訳批評の定義や使われ方はこれまで多種多様だった。最も明確な区別は、研究活動の一環としての批評と、ジャーナリズムの一環としてなされる批評である。翻訳学という新しい学問分野の大枠を作った一人であるジェイムズ・S・ホームズJames S. Holmes （1972/1998: 78）は、ジャーナリズムの批評を取り上げ、彼が翻訳学の応用部門（applied Translation Studies）と称した分野に含めた。
