Назва “популярна література” використовується разом з термінами “масова література” та “белетристика” на позначення текстів, які сприймаються як менш “вартісні”, ніж ті, що офіційно схвалюються культурним істеблішментом і вважаються частиною “серйозної” Літератури з великої літери “Л” (див. Художній переклад (Literary translation)). Популярну літературу часто ототожнюють з “жанровою літературою” (Murphy 2018: 5), тобто текстами, які зазвичай є шаблонними, використовують стандартизованих персонажів і сюжети та належать до таких жанрів, як детектив, науково-популярна фантастика, любовний роман і комедія. Оскільки для популярної літератури – як перекладної, так і ні – характерні високі обсяги продажів, цей термін також використовується як синонім до визначень “література масового ринку” та “бестселери”. Однак відзначається, що романи, які є скоріш “літературними”, ніж “популярними”, також можуть бути бестселерами (Gelder 2004: 13), а класична література насправді теж може перекладатися для масового ринку (Milton 2001).
