Исследования, ориентированные на изучение процесса письменного перевода, составляют одно из трех основных научных направлений Дескриптивной теории перевода (Descriptive Translation Studies) (Holmes 1988/2000). Данные исследования имеют основательную эмпирическую базу и нацелены на понимание природы когнитивных процессов, задействованных в процессе перевода, причем основное внимание фокусируется на личности переводчика.
