Визначення гри слів Дірка Делабастіти є лаконічним, але вичерпним: « Гра слів – це загальна назва для різноманітних текстових явищ, в яких структурні особливості мов(и) використовуються для того, щоб викликати комунікативно важливе зіставлення двох (чи більше) мовних структур із більш-менш схожими формами та більш-менш відмінними значеннями » (Delabastita 1996: 128). З огляду на зміст декілька значень активуються ідентичними або схожими формами у тексті. З огляду на форму визначення включає омонімію (однакова вимова і написання), омофонію (однакова вимова), омографію (однакове написання) і паронімію (схожа форма). З огляду на текст, за словами автора, каламбур може бути « горизонтальним » і « вертикальним » (Haussmann, пояснено у праці Delabastita 1996: 128).
