This is a provocative book; I was indeed occasionally provoked. Theo Hermans’ style draws attention to itself rather like the old translation metaphor of stained glass: one’s attention often lingers on the glass itself, which obscures what lies beyond. Some of the stained glass is elegant, ironic and witty, but some seems to mask a certain conceptual slipperiness.
