Sur le rôle des métaphores en traductologie contemporaine

Résumé

Loin d'être un substrat de théories 'préscientifiques', la métaphore traductologique conserve sa place et son rôle dans les théories contemporaines. Entant qu' instrument cognitif, elle y accomplit l'interaction entre le théme et desphores choisis dans des domaines comme la psycholinguistique ou la théorie actantielle. Par son extension sémantique, elle engendre des réajustements successifs souvent métaphoriques à leur tour. En tant que procédé argumentatif, lamétaphore sert à imposer de nouveaux modéles théoriques; corrélativement, ellesert à marginaliser des modéles antérieurs ou concurrents par une représentationnouvelle de leurs concepts.

Dans les limites d'un article qui se propose de rendre compte des métapho-res traductologiques contemporaines, point n'est besoin d'invoquer des cri-tères d'exhaustivité, ni quant aux divers types de métaphores, ni quant àleur représentativé en regard d'un corpus de textes qui s'est tres rapidement [ p. 34 ] étendu au cours des dernières décennies. Devant la complexité du pa-norama théorique offert aujourd'hui par la traductologie s'impose certesune analyse critique ou métathéorique, mais parallélement une attitudeproprement historiographique. L'une des tàches urgentes de l'historien desthéories consiste à rétablir une périodisation plus adéquate que celle quenous donnent à voir trop souvent les théoriciens: les traductologues moder-nes sont en effet le plus souvent partisans d'une conception 'progressiste' deleur discipline (D'hulst 1991), qui les amene à situer ses débuts 'scientifi-ques' aux alentours des années 1950, reléguant dans un passé 'préscientifi-que' la réflexion traductive antérieure. Outre que pour l'historiographe,une telle représentation apparaît comme simpliste—elle est l'émanationd'une conception elle-méme historique de la science—, elle contient unevalorisation qui risque de marginaliser, tant les formes de réflexion traductologique déviantes, que la démarche historique elle-méme qui prend celleci pour objet.
