    The two volumes under review are the printed manifestation of an innovative cooperative approach to organizing an international meeting of minds—the 1990 Maastricht-Lódz "Duo Colloquium" on "Translation and Meaning". In the Proceedings the generai theme of the conference(s), which raises an undoubtedly central issue for the theory and practice of translation, is dealt with in a total of 80 contributions, densely filling some 780 pages of text.
