Chapter 12
Language variation and standardization
Give two examples of phonological variation involving two different parameters in a sign language you know or by using a search on the internet.
Ideally take examples from your own sign language. Important here is the difference between phonetic and phonological variation, and between phonological and lexical variation.
An example: the BSL sign bank dictionary includes 9 variants of the sign america: http://bslsignbank.ucl.ac.uk/dictionary/words/America.html. These are all lexical variants since they differ from each other in various parameters. In the Sign BSL dictionary http://www.signbsl.com/sign/america, there are 6 different clips for america. Clips 1 and 3 are phonological variants since they differ only in orientation.
