Chapter 3
Acquisition
A 2–3 year old boy acquiring Finnish Sign Language uses the -hand:
-
instead of the -hand in mother, boy;
-
instead of the -hand in broken;
-
instead of the -hand in binoculars.
What do you call this process in phonological acquisition?
This is called phonological substitution. The -hand is far more frequent and easier to articulate than the target handshapes in the signs the child was using.
