Як вид трудової діяльності, переклад, можливо, є одним з найдавніших, та він ще й досі «не має офіційного статусу» (Gouadec 2007: 245), чи радше, «відповідного суспільного або професійного становища». Більше того, не існує якихось спільних ознак статусу перекладача (Grbic 2010), а сама його концепція є «складним, суб’єктивним і залежним від контексту поняттям» (Dam & Zethsen 2008: 74). При цьому, статус тут означатиме визнання перекладу важливою спеціалізованою галуззю, що вимагає унікальних перекладацьких навичок та вмінь, а компетентність(Competence) і якість(Quality in translation) – це ключові передумови фахової діяльності. Обговоримо ситуацію із статусом перекладачів з погляду університетських кіл, ринку та самих перекладачів.
