Модель можна визначити як певну емпіричну теорію, призначену для демонстрації певного її ізоморфного відношення до об’єкта моделювання. Модель пропонує спрощену репрезентацію суттєвих ознак, що, як припускається, є притаманними об’єкту моделювання. Адекватні моделі не тільки точно описують відповідний об’єкт, але й включають або породжують можливі пояснення і гіпотези, які можна перевірити. Наочним прикладом ефективної моделі з потужною прогнозувальною здатністю є періодична система хімічних елементів Менделєєва, яку він розробив близько 1870 року. Ця система мала незаповнені клітинки, які, відповідно до передбачення моделі, будуть заповнюватися елементами, що відкриють пізніше. З часом такі передбачення справдилися і це стало переконливим доказом того, що прогнозувальні принципи, на яких ґрунтується таблиця, є вірними.
