Lääne filosoofia ajaloos on harva pööratud tähelepanu tõlkimisele ja sellega kaasnevatele filosoofilistele küsimustele. Kuni hiljutise ajani on institutsionaliseeritud filosoofia ja tõlketeaduse vahelist suhet peetud selgelt asümmeetriliseks: tõlkijad ja tõlkespetsialistid näisid olevat palju rohkem huvitatud filosoofiast kui filosoofid otsesõnalisest juurdlemisest tõlkimise keerukuste üle (Pym 2007: 25). Selle suhte dünaamika hakkas muutuma kahekümnenda sajandi viimastel kümnenditel, kui kaasaegses mõtteviisis kasvas järjest rohkem teadlikkus filosoofia ja tõlkimise vahelistest lahutamatutest seostest. On näiteks väidetud, et kaasaegne mõtteviis ei ole pelgalt huvitatud tõlkimisest, vaid on sellest „vaimustatud“, kuna see pakub „kontseptsiooni“, millest lähtuvalt „arutletakse filosoofia võimalikkuse, kui mitte selle tegeliku praktika üle“ (Benjamin 1989: 9).
