La traduction a beau être l’une des plus anciennes professions du monde, elle « n’a toujours pas de statut officiel » (Gouadec 2007 : 245, tr. Gouadec 2009 : 245) ou plutôt ne jouit pas d’une « position [de fait] par rapport à la société, aux institutions ». Qui plus est, il n’y a pas d’indicateurs convenus du statut des traducteurs (Grbić 2010), et le concept lui-même est « une construction complexe et subjective qui dépend du contexte » (Dam & Zethsen 2008 : 74, notre traduction). Dans le cadre du présent article, la notion de « statut » renvoie à la valorisation de la traduction à titre de spécialisation exigeant des compétences particulières, et à la reconnaissance de la compétence et de la qualité comme deux traits constitutifs de son exercice professionnel. Nous aborderons trois perspectives sur la question : celle du milieu universitaire, celle du marché et celle des traducteurs eux-mêmes.
