Foreign-language learning by means of subtitled audiovisuals has been the object of scholarly study for more than four decades. Studies converge in observing that the use of subtitles facilitates linguistic and cultural comprehension, in both formal and informal settings. Karen Price (1983: 8), a forerunner of this teaching/learning practice, explains how a group of ESL students, from twenty different language and educational backgrounds, improved foreign language/culture acquisition after watching intralingual subtitled TV programmes.
