Altyazılı görsel-işitsel içerikler yoluyla yabancı dil öğrenimi, kırk yıldan uzun bir süredir bilimsel araştırmalara konu olmuştur. Altyazı kullanımının hem formal hem informal ortamlarda, dilsel ve kültürel kavramayı kolaylaştırması ise bu çalışmalarda gözlemlenen ortak noktadır. Bu öğretme/öğrenme uygulamasının öncülerinden biri olan Karen Price (1983: 8), farklı dil ve eğitim geçmişlerine sahip, ikinci dil olarak İngilizce öğrenen yirmi öğrenciden oluşan bir grubun, diliçi altyazılı TV programları izledikten sonra yabancı dil/kültür ediniminin nasıl geliştiğini açıklamıştır.
