The complex demands of modern life have led to an unprecedented information explosion which has not only affected translation, but produced a flood of dictionaries worldwide, and in its wake, an increasing interest in academic lexicography. In such a situation it is necessary to monitor and, where possible, raise standards of theory and practice continuously. Among the means available, the holding of conferences seems among the most effective: conferences establish contacts, encourage criticism, and allow comparisons "in real time"
