Even before the institutional establishment of Translation Studies, during the past few decades, there never was any lack of anthologies for those interested in the study of translation. Most of them were of a general nature (for instance Brower 1959, Störig 1963, Schulte and Biguenet 1992), some were explicitly historical (Steiner 1975 and Lefevere 1977 and 1992) and some were compiled from an academic and/or didactic point of view (Wilss 1981, Chesterman 1989).
