This is a collection of papers based on a 1999 symposium held at the University of Surrey in honour of Peter Newmark. It gives pride of place to a keynote paper by Newmark himself, which is preceded by a transcript of his oral summary of the paper, and a Round Table discussion of his paper and the general theme of “Translation in the new millennium”; it is then followed by 13 additional papers by participants in the symposium.
