(Pérez-González and Susam-Saraeva 2012Pérez-González, Luis, and Şebnem Susam-Saraeva 2012 “Non-professionals Translating and Interpreting: Participatory and Engaged Perspectives.” The Translator 18 (2): 149–165. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。 作为回应,在翻译研究的领域,已有学者开始分析翻译过程中人类与非人类之间的相互作用,以及这种相互作用对翻译结果的影响 (Bowker 2006Bowker, Lynne 2006 “Translation Memory and ‘Text’.” In Lexicography, Terminology and Translation: Text-based Studies in Honour of Ingrid Meyer, ed. by Lynne Bowker, 175–187. Ottawa: University of Ottawa Press.Google Scholar; Moorkens et al. 2014Moorkens, Joss, Stephen Doherty, Dorothy Kenny, and Sharon O’Brien 2014 “A Virtuous Circle: Laundering Translation Memory Data Using Statistical Machine Translation.” Perspectives 22 (3): 291–303. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; Olohan 2011Olohan, Maeve 2011 “Translators and Translation Technology: The Dance of Agency.” Translation Studies 4 (3): 342–357. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。鉴于翻译技术越来越重要,翻译技术技能的掌握被认为是翻译能力发展的关键 (Quah 2006Quah, Chiew Kin 2006Translation and Technology. New York: Palgrave MacMillan. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。即便如此,尽管可以想象得到机器翻译技术的自动化程度会越来越高 (Kenny 2011Kenny, Dorothy 2011 “Electronic Tools and Resources for Translators.” In The Oxford Handbook of Translation Studies, ed. by Kirsten Malmkjær, and Kevin Windle, 455–472. New York: Oxford University Press.Google Scholar), 但翻译记忆库等新技术和工具还是难以取代人工翻译。计算机辅助的翻译实践已日益成为“一个由电子连接起来的一组组团队通过技术系统来实现的去中心化过程” (Tymoczko 2005Tymoczko, Maria 2005 “Trajectories of Research in Translation Studies.” Meta 50 (4): 1082–1097. http://www.erudit.org/revue/meta/2005/v50/n4/012062ar.html%3Flang%3Des. doi: DOI logo, 1089)。在这种过程中,从个人到群体的转变是“世界网络化和相互依赖性增强”的结果 (Tymoczko 2009 2009 “Why Translators Should Want to Internationalize Translation Studies.” The Translator 15 (2): 401–421. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 401)。字幕组就是这种转变的例子,并且这打破了(传统)道德和(商业的)版权界限 (Dwyer 2012Dwyer, Tessa 2012 “Fansub Dreaming on ViKi: ‘Don’t Just Watch But Help When You Are Free’.” The Translator 18 (2): 217–243. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

字幕组翻译的题材很广,从日本动画、漫画和连环画到通过电视频道、电影和视频游戏传播的各种类型和媒介。本着“由粉丝为粉丝翻译”的精神 (Diaz Cintas and Sanchez 2006Diaz-Cintas, Jorge, and Pablo Muñoz-Sanchez 2006 “Fansubs: Audiovisual Translation in an Amateur Environment.” The Journal of Specialised Translation (6). http://www.jostrans.org/issue06/art_diaz_munoz.php.),字幕组成员扮演着“实际上自封的翻译专员”的角色 (Pérez-González 2007Pérez-González, Luis 2007 “Intervention in New Amateur Subtitling Cultures: A Multimodal Account.” Linguistica Antverpiensia, New Series – Themes in Translation Studies (6): 67–80. https://lans.ua.ac.be/index.php/LANS-TTS/article/view/180, 71),他们不仅选择翻译什么字幕,而且选择如何翻译字幕。因此,字幕组可被认为是一种用户引导的生产方式,这蕴含了文化民主 (Burgess 2006Burgess, Jean 2006 “Hearing Ordinary Voices: Cultural Studies, Vernacular Creativity and Digital Storytelling.” Continuum 20 (2): 201–214. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。 随着权力从文化精英向草根用户的转移,其政治潜力逐渐凸显,这使得草根用户能够越来越多地解读并参与文化形式和文化商品 (Hartley 2004Hartley, John 2004 “The ‘Value Chain of Meaning’ and the New Economy.” International Journal of Cultural Studies 7 (1): 129–141. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。 字幕组翻译倾向于“通过字幕的介入形式,建立业余的译者网络,反抗全球资本主义结构的文化实践” (Pérez-González 2012 2012 “Co-creational Subtitling in the Digital Media: Transformative and Authorial Practices.” International Journal of Cultural Studies 16 (1): 3–21. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 6)。研究这种非专业翻译可加深我们对翻译的潜在用途以及其意识形态和政治影响的理解。本文专门探讨在中华人民共和国的社会政治环境中,技术对字幕组意识形态上的影响。

2.中国的字幕组翻译和游戏化

许多现有的研究都倾向于强调字幕组的活动性质,但许多问题至今仍有待解决,特别是字幕组译者实际上在抵制什么、他们的译作在多大程度上挑战了这一产业(Gambier 2015Gambier, Yves 2015 “Crowdsourcing and Resistance?” In European Society for Translation Studies Newsletter 47 (November 2015): 19–20.Google Scholar)? 中国的字幕组已经跨越了文化实践的界限走向了政治行动主义。这已经形成不同于官方翻译的另一种权力机制。首先,字幕组的传播揭示了国家不断实施审查制度的矛盾性。一方面,执政的共产党约束民众的行为;另一方面,它也确保了一些国家允许的受欢迎的大众娱乐形式的存在 (Zhao 1998Zhao, Bin 1998 “Popular Family Television and Party Ideology: The Spring Festival Eve Happy Gathering.” Media, Culture & Society 20 (1): 43–58. http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/016344398020001004. doi: DOI logo, 43; Fung 2009Fung, Anthony Y. H. 2009 “Fandom, Youth and Consumption in China.” European Journal of Cultural Studies 12 (3): 285–303. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。中国当局允许“市场驱动的大众文化和软娱乐”繁荣发展,但让他们只发挥“维护社会安定的保守角色,从而维护党的持续的政治主导地位” (Zhao 2008Zhao, Yuezhi 2008Communication in China: Political Economy, Power, and Conflict. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.Google Scholar, 223)。在这方面,字幕组在中国流行文化和娱乐行业引入了一种新的、充满活力的元素,因为中国观众在接触字幕组翻译的媒体内容时,往往意识到官方审查在多大程度上损害了正式引进的国外电影与影视剧的真实性 (Gao 2012Gao, Yang 2012TV Talk: American Television, Chinese Audiences, and the Pursuit of an Authentic Self. PhD diss. Vanderbilt University.Google Scholar)。第二,字幕组基于网络的翻译项目正在改变官方资助的电影翻译——而这些官方资助的翻译仍在执行替中国政府的把关任务。例如,官方的翻译已经开始摆脱刻板的语言规范,开始模仿字幕组的非正式风格 (Lv and Li 2013Lv, Yuyong, and Min Li 2013 “On the Entertainment-Oriented Rewriting in the Subtitle Translation of English Movies.” The Chinese Translators Journal 34 (3): 105–109.Google Scholar)。

最重要的是,在一个配音曾经是唯一的获取试听资源的国家 (Qian 2009Qian, Shaochang 2009 “Screen Translation in Mainland China.” In Dubbing and Subtitling in a World Context, ed. by Gilbert C. F. Fong, and Kenneth K. L. Au, 13–22. Hong Kong: The Chinese University Press.Google Scholar; Du, Li, and Cheng 2013Du, Zhifeng, Yao Li, and Gang Cheng 2013Basic Literacy in AV Translation & Research. Hangzhou: Zhejiang University Press.Google Scholar), 字幕组的行动具有与目标观众建立新联系的巨大颠覆性潜能 (Kung 2016Kung, Szu-We 2016 “Audienceship and Community of Practice: An Exploratory Study of Chinese Fansubbing Communities.” Asia Pacific Translation and Intercultural Studies 3 (3): 252–266. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。 Massidda (2015)Massidda, Serenella 2015Audiovisual Translation in the Digital Age: The Italian Fansubbing Phenomenon. New York: Palgrave Macmillan. DOI logoGoogle Scholar 将字幕组的行动与 “数字玩工(digital playbour)” 这个理念联系在一起 (Scholz 2013Scholz, Trebor 2013Digital Labour: The Internet as Playground and Workplace. New York: Routledge.Google Scholar),这个理念为工作和娱乐并存的活动下了定义。字幕组在中国最近的发展也反映了将趣味引入翻译的趋势,这可以用游戏化的概念来解释——游戏化的定义是“采用游戏机制并将其运用于其他的网络特性中来提高用户参与度” (Terill 2008Terill, Bret 2008 “My Coverage of Lobby of the Social Gaming Summit.” Accessed November 12, 2016. http://www.bretterrill.com/2008/06/my-coverage-of-lobby-of-social-gaming.html)。其指导思想是“在非游戏的环境、产品和服务中使用游戏设计的元素来激发期望的行为” (Deterding 2012Deterding, Sebastian 2012 “Gamification: Designing for Motivation.” Interactions 19 (4): 14–17. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 14)。简明扼要的说,游戏化是关于“使用游戏的原则,如奖励、升级和流程,来吸引用户并影响他们的行为和态度,增加知识或提高技能” (Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Smith, and Tosca 2013Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Simon, Jonas Heide Smith, and Susana Pajares Tosca 2013Understanding Video Games: The Essential Introduction. 2nd ed. London: Routledge.Google Scholar, 243)。

3.国家的控制和公民的不服从

尽管中国历史上的审查制度“从未间断” (Tan 2015Tan, Zaixi 2015 “Censorship in Translation: The Case of the People’s Republic of China.” Neohelicon 42 (1): 313–339. DOI logoGoogle Scholar), 但中国翻译学者对国家审查制度的研究却很少。大量的研究集中在文学、文化和政治审查上 (Cornelius and Smith 2002Cornelius, Sheila, and Ian Haydn Smith 2002New Chinese Cinema: Challenging Representations. London: Wallflower.Google Scholar; Gao 2009Gao, Zhihong 2009 “Serving a Stir-Fry of Market, Culture and Politics – On Globalisation and Film Policy in Greater China.” Policy Studies 30 (4): 423–438. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; Zhu 2008Zhu, Jianlan 2008 “Roadblock and Roadmap: Circumventing Press Censorship in China in the New Media Dimension.” University of La Verne Law Review 30: 404–466.Google Scholar),但是翻译和译者所扮演的角色在很大程度上被忽视了。关于审查与翻译的研究很少,主要集中在两个方面:一是国家资助的中国文学英译,旨在向中国公民和国际社会传播中国的软实力和文化威望 (Chang 2015 2015 “Auto-Image and Norms in Source-Initiated Translation in China.” Asia Pacific Translation and Intercultural Studies 2 (2): 96–107. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; Geng 2014Geng, Qiang 2014 “How Government-Patronized Translation of Chinese Literature is Received – A Case Study of the Panda Books Series.” Comparative Literature in China 1: 66–77.Google Scholar; Volland 2008Volland, Nicolai 2008 “Translating the Socialist State: Cultural Exchange, National Identity, and the Socialist World in the Early PRC.” Twentieth-century China 33 (2): 51–72. DOI logoGoogle Scholar);第二,外国文学通过翻译进入中国,往往由于政治和文化的原因导致一些外国的元素被删除 (Chang 2008Chang, Nam Fung 2008 “Censorship in Translation and Translation Studies in Present-Day China.” In Translation and Censorship in Different Times and Landscapes, ed. by Teresa Seruya, and Maria Lin Moniz, 229–240. Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars Publishing.Google Scholar; Tan 2015Tan, Zaixi 2015 “Censorship in Translation: The Case of the People’s Republic of China.” Neohelicon 42 (1): 313–339. Amsterdam: Rodopi.Google Scholar)。 Lv and Li (2015) 2015 “On the New Features of Online Film and TV Subtitle Translation in China.” International Journal of English Linguistics 5 (6): 122–127.

(Wang 2010 2010 “Piracy and the DVD/VCD Market: Contradiction and Paradoxes.” In Art, Politics, and Commerce in Chinese Cinema, ed. by Ying Zhu, and Stanley Rosen, 71–84. Hong Kong: Hong Kong University Press.Google Scholar; Pang 2011Pang, Laikwan 2011 “The State Against Ghosts: A Genealogy of China’s Film Censorship Policy.” Screen 52 (4): 461–476. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; Xie, T. 2012Xie, Tianhai 2012Repression and Ideological Management: Chinese Film Censorship After 1976 and its Impacts on Chinese Cinema. MA thesis Florida State University.Google Scholar)。最重要的是,国家新闻出版广电总局负责监管与文化和媒体产品有关的一切事务,并且代表中央政府批准外国(流行)文化和媒体内容的进入 (Bai 2013Bai, Siying 2013 “Recent Developments in the Chinese Film Censorship System.” Research Papers. Paper 377. Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois University. http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1478&context=gs_rp)。国家新闻出版广电总局 (2014) 禁止公众接触以下内容:

  • 违反宪法确定的基本原则的;

  • 危害中国的统一、主权和领土完整的;

  • 泄露国家秘密,危害国家安全的;

  • 煽动民族仇恨、民族歧视的;

  • 违反道德文化规范和原则的;

  • 宣扬邪教和迷信的;

  • 扰乱社会秩序,破坏社会稳定的;

  • 宣扬淫秽、赌博、暴力、教唆犯罪的;

  • 侮辱或者诽谤他人,侵害他人合法权益的;

  • 危害社会公德,诋毁民族优秀文化的;

  • 有国家法律、法规禁止的其他内容的。

然而,对于被审查的个别内容并没有全面释义和指导方针 (Makinen 2015Makinen, Julie 2015 “Leaving China? Your Books, Maps and DVDs May Be Confiscated.” Los Angeles Times October 26 2015 http://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-china-censors-20151026-story.html), 因为在实际操作中,中国的审查是“依情况而定的、个体化的、不断协商的,而不是绝对的或者有约束力的” (Calkins 1998Calkins, Mary Lynne 1998 “Censorship in Chinese Cinema.” Hastings Communication and Entertainment Law Journal 21 (2): 239–338.Google Scholar, 243)。例如,对于如何理解诸如社会道德和传统文化之类的概念,既没有明确的描述性参考,也没有任何迹象表明什么样的内容可能会损害这些价值。审查的焦点在于内容本身,因此,在不同的情况下,审查的标准也会变化 (Bai 2013Bai, Siying 2013 “Recent Developments in the Chinese Film Censorship System.” Research Papers. Paper 377.

(Voice of America 2016Voice of America 2016 “China Will Ban Foreign Media from Distributing Information Online Since March 10 2016” [in Chinese]. Accessed November 12, 2016. http://www.voachinese.com/a/china-ban-foreign-media-online-20160219/3198284.html)。这项新政策使外国音像制品的许可和版权变成独立的和排他的过程。它为国家行政机关保留授予发行和放映的权力。因此,中国政府并不认为拥有版权就可以合法地发行外国数字媒体产品。但是,中国政府的这一立场一直面临着来自各种团体的压力,特别是来自那些凭借信息和通信技术的进步和传播的团体。这些团体倾向于反抗那些“为良好的进程所制定的法律” (Klang 2004Klang, Mathias 2004 “Civil Disobedience Online.” Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 2 (2): 75–83. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

技术的进步不服务于任何预先设定的目标,并且它可以被看作一个“在不同可能性之间徘徊的‘矛盾的’发展过程” (Feenberg 2010Feenberg, Andrew 2010Between Reason and Experience: Essays in Technology and Modernity. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press.Google Scholar, 15)。这揭示了一个悖论:技术的传播既支持了国家统治,同时也削弱了国家统治。从电视和视频技术的诞生到现代数码互联,同样的技术被用于政治和意识形态控制,也可能被观众用来从国家统治中获得自由。在20世纪80年代末电视出现后不久,家用视频技术就传入中国,而盗版音像作为一种副产品也一直存在 (Creemer 2012Creemer, Rogier 2012Explaining Audiovisual Media Piracy in China – Media Control, Enforcement and Globalization. PhD diss. Maastricht University.Google Scholar; Yang 2009Yang, Jung Yun 2009 “Bringing the Question of Chinese IPR Enforcement to the WTO Under Trips: An Effective Strategy or a Meaningless and Overused Tactic by the US.” Pittsburgh Journal of Technology Law and Policy 10: 1–27.Google Scholar; Wang 2003Wang, Shujen 2003Framing Piracy: Globalization and Film Distribution in Greater China. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefileld Publisher.Google Scholar)。中国当局从来没有接受过无限的(并且因此不可控的)网络空间这个理念,并且他们仍在努力维持对数字空间严密的意识形态和政治监督 (Tsui 2003Tsui, Lokman 2003 “The Panopticon as the Antithesis of a Space of Freedom Control and Regulation of the Internet in China.” China Information 17 (2): 65–82. DOI logoGoogle Scholar),然而国家对在线访问的垄断反而促进了互联网在中国的扩张 (Zhang 2006Zhang, Lena L. 2006 “Behind the ‘Great Firewall’: Decoding China’s Internet Media Policies from the Inside.” Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies 12 (3): 271–291. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 286)。无论如何,现在的观众发现与电视、数字影碟(DVDs)和电影的(更旧的)消费模式相比,互联网更符合他们的生活 (Zhang 2013Zhang, Yin 2013 “A Preliminary Analysis of Contemporary Online Distribution of Films.” Short Stories: Original Creation 8: 81–82.Google Scholar)。

互联网在中国社会既是一种能带来自由的技术,也是一种能使人受控的技术 (Tsui 2003Tsui, Lokman 2003 “The Panopticon as the Antithesis of a Space of Freedom Control and Regulation of the Internet in China.” China Information 17 (2): 65–82. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。因为网络上持不同政见的活动与现实世界中的公民不服从之间不一定存在因果关系 (Herold 2008Herold, David 2008 “Development of a Civic Society Online? Internet Vigilantism and State Control in Chinese Cyberspace.” Asia Journal of Global Studies 2 (1): 26–37.Google Scholar),所以公平地说,大多数专注于中国互联网的研究,在某种程度上过分强调了自由的数字信息所构成的威胁 (Weber and Jia 2007Weber, Ian, and Lu Jia 2007 “Internet and Self-regulation in China: The Cultural Logic of Controlled Commodification.” Media, Culture & Society 29 (5): 772–789. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; MacKinnon 2008MacKinnon, Rebecca 2008 “Flatter World and Thicker Walls? Blogs, Censorship and Civic Discourse in China.” Public Choice 134 (1/2): 31–46. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。数字消费主义文化在当代中国的出现,使得互联网用户认为社交、娱乐和商业网络活动比政治领域的活动更重要 (Damm 2007Damm, Jens 2007 “The Internet and the Fragmentation of Chinese Society.” Critical Asian Studies 39 (2): 273–294. DOI logoGoogle Scholar; Zhang 2006Zhang, Lena L. 2006 “Behind the ‘Great Firewall’: Decoding China’s Internet Media Policies from the Inside.” Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies 12 (3): 271–291. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。尽管如此,互联网无疑被用来引导公民的不服从,尤其是在中国受过良好教育的年轻城市居民中 (Tang and Yang 2011Tang, Lijun, and Peidong Yang 2011 “Symbolic Power and the Internet: The Power of a ‘Horse’.” Media, Culture & Society 33 (5): 675–691.

(Pang 2012 2012Creativity and Its Discontents: China’s Creative Industries and Intellectual Property Rights Offenses. Durham, NC: Duke University Press. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。因此,自2009年以来,国家新闻出版广电总局和其他审查机构已采取措施打击字幕组织网络。为了生存,一些字幕组加入了合法的商业公司,帮助他们翻译外语的娱乐和教育媒体产品。例如,字幕组人人影视(YYeTs),在2010年被雇去为视频流媒体平台 Sohu (www.sohu.com) 制作美国连续剧《迷失》(2004–2010)的字幕 (Hu 2013Hu, Kelly 2013 “Competition and Collaboration: Chinese Video Websites, Subtitle Groups, State Regulation and Market.” International Journal of Cultural Studies 17: 437–451. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。 同年,网易(www.163.com)还聘请了该字幕组翻译耶鲁大学的一些公开课程。伊甸园和风软美剧等字幕组拒绝加入商业领域,因为他们认为这与字幕组的精神和宗旨——即坚持内容的免费共享性、社区性和志愿性的价值观——相矛盾 (Zhang and Mao 2013Zhang, Weiyu, and Chengting Mao 2013 “Fan Activism Sustained and Challenged: Participatory Culture in Chinese Online Translation Communities.” Chinese Journal of Communication 6 (1): 45–61. DOI logoGoogle Scholar) 。然而,到2014年底,由于来自政府和版权所有者的压力以及资金不足,这些字幕组最终不得不停止字幕翻译活动。与倒闭的同行不同,人人影视字幕组努力维持着与大公司的关系,并且把以前的网站转型为面向美剧爱好者的社交网络。

不同于和私人商业部门的合作关系,在其他的平台上共享字幕组资源的行为将这种方式的翻译引入非法领域。然而在中国,围绕版权保护的法律框架和公众意识基础并不牢固 (He 2014He, Tianxiang 2014 “What Can We Learn from Japanese Anime Industries? The Differences Between the Domestic and Oversea Copyright Protection Strategies towards Fan Activities.” American Journal of Comparative Law 64 (2): 1–32. http://www.ingentaconnect.com/con-tent/ascl/ajcl/2014/00000062/00000004/art00005. doi: DOI logo; Hsiao 2014Hsiao, Chi-hua 2014 “The Moralities of Intellectual Property: Subtitle Groups as Cultural Brokers in China.” The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology 15 (3): 218–241. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。字幕组之所以在法律灰色地带运作,是因为他们的材料无法通过官方渠道获得。他们的翻译产出不算授权的知识产权,所以这不会对外国媒体公司造成收入损失 (Meng and Wu 2013Meng, Bingchun, and Fei Wu 2013 “Commons/Commodity: Peer Production Caught in the Web of the Commercial Market.” Information, Communication & Society 16 (1): 125–145. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 130)。此外,一般来说盗版音像,尤其是字幕组在很大程度上被认为是理所当然的,普通民众并不认为这是一个大问题 (Wilson 2011Wilson, Magnus 2011The Politics of Enjoyment: The Media Viewing Preferences and Practices of Young Higher-educated Chinese. PhD diss. University of Westminster.Google Scholar, 225)。事实上,官方在实施版权保护法规方面缺乏可信度,因为政府最关心的是为了自身利益保障广播权,而不是保护版权所有人的利益 (Hu 2013Hu, Kelly 2013 “Competition and Collaboration: Chinese Video Websites, Subtitle Groups, State Regulation and Market.” International Journal of Cultural Studies 17: 437–451. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 443)。

目前,视频流媒体服务只能由国有或国家控股的特许企业所提供 (SAPPRFT 2014SAPPRFT (State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television) 2014 “Announcement by the SAPPRFT on Further Supervision on Online Broadcast of Foreign Films and TV Series” [in Chinese]. Accessed November 13, 2016. http://dy.chinasarft.gov.cn/html/www/article/2014/01493bffdb6528a0402881a7470edaf0.html)。 然而,即使是这些媒体企业可能也有侵犯版权的风险。例如,国有的在线视频流媒体平台CNTV被两家私人视频网站,乐视网(LeTV)和迅雷视频(Xun Lei Kan Kan)起诉,称其在未经许可的情况下播放了100多个他们拥有版权的节目 (Hu 2013Hu, Kelly 2013 “Competition and Collaboration: Chinese Video Websites, Subtitle Groups, State Regulation and Market.” International Journal of Cultural Studies 17: 437–451. DOI logoGoogle Scholar) 。社交媒体网络经常批评中国政府所倡导的自相矛盾的版权保护措施。在2013年4月26日世界知识产权日,从新浪微博(Sina Microblog)(也就是中国版的推特)的观众评论中就证明了这一点。在评论中,有一个将字幕组成员比作普罗米修斯的比喻被广泛引用,“盗版者就是盗火者”这句话恰如其分地说明了观众的观点,他们认为字幕组翻译是一种类似英雄的行为而不是非法活动 (Chen and Yan 2014Chen, Yi, and Jianlei Yan 2014 “The Latest Development in the Fansubbing Network: Pirates BecomeFire-Bringers.” Accessed November 13, 2016. http://cul.qq.com/a/20141013/016609.html) 。 (Rowe, Ruddock, and Hutchins 2010Rowe, David, Andy Ruddock, and Brett Hutchins 2010 “Cultures of Complaint: Online Fan Message Boards and Networked Digital Media Sport Communities.” Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies 16 (3): 298–315. DOI logoGoogle Scholar, 229)。

粉丝行动主义的核心是一种志愿(或帮助的意愿)、社区建设和经验共享的精神,并且这最终取决于对媒体产品消费的共同热情 (Kligler-Vilenchik et al. 2011Kligler-Vilenchik, Neta, Joshua McVeigh-Schultz, Christine Weitbrecht, and Chris Tokuhama 2011 “Experiencing Fan Activism: Understanding the Power of Fan Activist Organizations Through Members’ Narratives.” Transformative Works and Cultures 10.Google Scholar)。所谓的“粉丝团”(fandoms)是由粉丝组成的团体,在一个由主权国家和经济企业主导的世界里,他们总是有潜力成为阻力的载体或变革的催化剂 (Brough and Shresthova 2012Brough, Melissa M., and Sangita Shresthova 2012 “Fandom Meets Activism: Rethinking Civic and Political Participation.” Transformative Works and Cultures 10. http://journal.transfor-mativeworks.org/index.php/twc/article/view/303/265)。当然,与此同时,粉丝们必须依靠统治力量提供的资源来建立自由的创作空间,使他们能够自主行动 (Duncombe 2002Duncombe, Stephen 2002Cultural Resistance Reader. London: Verso.Google Scholar)。通过在既定的参与框架下宣布他们对某一特定问题的参与,他们往往会宣扬与当权者所支持的不同甚至相矛盾的论述 (Jenkins 2014Jenkins, Henry 2014 “Participatory Culture: From Co-Creating Brand Meaning to Changing the World.” GfK Marketing Intelligence Review 6 (2): 34–39. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

2014年11月29日,在人人影视宣布关闭后不久,字幕组在其主页和新浪微博主页上用拉丁语发布了一条简短信息,上面写着 “invictus maneo”(我仍未被征服)(Yang 2014Yang, Xinjie 2014 “YYeTs’ Website is Shut Down in China, Despite a Short Two-Day ‘Resurrection’.” Accessed November 13, 2016. http://www.thepaper.cn/newsDetail_for-ward_1281888)。

(Wellman 2001Wellman, Barry 2001 “Physical Place and Cyberplace: The Rise of Personalized Networking.” International Journal of Urban and Regional Research 25 (2): 227–252. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

字幕组作为一个虚拟的社会空间,其成员受到基于他们共同的承诺、技能和目标而诞生的社区的约束。在这个虚拟空间里,他们可以为彼此和新成员在提高翻译和技术方面提供帮助。在虚拟社区中,每个字幕项目是由其成员通过紧密的垂直分工来完成的。这与大家熟知的众包不同。在众包中,合作关系往往基于由很多互联网用户组成的劳动力横向分布 (Howe 2008Howe, Jeff 2008Crowdsourcing: How the Power of the Crowd is Driving the Future of Business. London: Random House.Google Scholar), 通常缺少组织性和系统性,且在大多情况下都使用临时的解决问题的机制。字幕组的垂直结构在其成员中建立了一种等级制度,这种制度取决于成员的组龄,奉献程度和对社区的贡献等因素。在一个在线社区里,等级是一个生产力,它表现在新人与老手、外围参与者与核心成员、普通贡献者与决策者之间的一个学习和社会化的过程,而不是作为一种压制力量在组织和分散的层面上维持同侪生产力 (Berdou 2010Berdou, Evangelia 2010Organization in Open Source Communities: At the Crossroads of the Gift and Market Economies. London: Routledge.Google Scholar)。

(Wang and Gu 2016Wang, Xiaobo, and Baotong Gu 2016 “The Communication Design of WeChat: Ideological as well as Technical Aspects of Social Media.” Communication Design Quarterly Review 4 (1): 23–35. DOI logoGoogle Scholar),同时为来自200多个国家和地区的6亿多的用户提供即时通讯、视频聊天、电子出版和博客服务 (Yan 2015Yan, Jinfang 2015 “A Review of the Researches on WeChat.” Proceedings of the International Conference on Social Science and Technology Education (ICSSTE 2015). http://www.atlantis-press.com/php/download_paper.php?id=18851)。 (Jiang 2016Jiang, Min 2016 “Chinese Internet Business and Human Rights.” Business and Human Rights Journal 1 (1): 139–144. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

(Feenberg 2010Feenberg, Andrew 2010Between Reason and Experience: Essays in Technology and Modernity. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press.Google Scholar, xxiii)。

(Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Smith, and Tosca 2013Egenfeldt-Nielsen, Simon, Jonas Heide Smith, and Susana Pajares Tosca 2013Understanding Video Games: The Essential Introduction. 2nd ed. London: Routledge.Google Scholar, 248)。通过游戏化翻译活动,字幕组在互联网上大力推销自己,并获得了大量支持。相反,专业的视听译者不会和他们的观众互动或者为自己打广告,这使得他们在网络社区上成了隐形的中介。虽然当局仍然支持他们,并且他们的工作还没受到威胁,但在中国观众的眼里,他们的地位已经被削弱。因为越来越多的人喜欢在线观看字幕组翻译的媒体产品,而不是通过官方广播频道观看 (Lv and Li 2015 2015 “On the New Features of Online Film and TV Subtitle Translation in China.” International Journal of English Linguistics 5 (6): 122–127. DOI logoGoogle Scholar)。

(Ji 2015Ji, Le 2015 “Where is China’s Translation Policy Going in the Post-Fansubbing Era? – From the Perspective of Value Orientation.” 6th International Conference Media for All – Audiovisual Translation and Media Accessibility: Global Challenges. Sydney: Western Sydney University.)。未来的研究可以实证的方式,对字幕组网站和其他社交网络平台上的用户活动和互动进行调查,以进一步探究数字时代的发展所带来的新意识形态的冲突和权力关系。

Translator’s note

本文中一些情态性或评价性的词语也能体现出文章的语旨,例如:“more importantly”、“in essence”、“above all”、“inevitably”等等。

又如, “The paper draws on the strategies adopted by fansubbing groups to organise their working practices and interactive social activities with a view to engaging target audiences” 中的 “adopted” 一词,译者最初翻译为“利用”,但是该词不适合译文的语境,并且“利用”与“策略”不能搭配。经讨论,最终版本为“运用”。

第二个问题是词语的搭配。例如:在 “using game principles, like rewards, level up, and flow, to engage users and influence their behaviour, knowledge, attitudes, or skills” 这一句的后半句中,最初翻译是“来吸引用户并影响他们的行为、知识、态度或技能”。

又如,在翻译 “since in actual practice Chinese censorship is “contextual, individualized, and continuously negotiable rather than absolute or binding” 时,下划线部分最初被译为“结合语境的”,然而在法律语境中,该翻译不够专业,因此修改为更书面也更符合法律语境的“依情况而定”。“Technological expertise has enabled fansubbing groups to encroach (at least to a certain extent) on the social dynamics of power”,下划线部分最初被直译为“入侵”,后意译成“占有一席之地”,使译文更加顺畅,便于读者理解。

再如,在翻译 “It can also be conceivably claimed that relationships in cyberspace complement relationships in the real world and render the reality of community from geographical locations to person-based networks in cyberspace.”

例如:在翻译 “the imperialistic expansion of Anglophone hegemony into China” 时,最初翻译为“以英语霸权在中国的帝国主义式的扩张”。
