Phonology

Note: an important concept in this chapter is that of minimal pair, as minimal pairs allow for the identification of phonemes. It can be informative to look for minimal pairs in the sign language the students know. If little is known about the phonology of this sign language, it can be useful to consider whether specific handshapes, as exemplified below, are used distinctively in that language.
