Термін «деконструктивізм» чи «деконструкція» в основному використовується на позначення філософії Жака Дерріди (Jacques Derrida), хоча сам Дерріда не приписував цьому терміну якогось привілейованого статусу. Саме поняття «деконструктивізму» чи «деконструкції» було включено в низку дисциплін та різних підходів і набуло загальнішого значення, що вийшло за межі власних праць Жака Дерріди та має тривкий вплив на інші постструктуралістські, постмодерністські, постколоніальні та ґендерні підходи. Втілений Деррідою радикальний виклик традиційній Західній (метафізичній) філософії, зокрема її ієрархічним бінарним опозиціям, має наслідки для теорії та практики перекладу. В перекладознавстві (Translation Studies) ідеї деконструкції стали вперше застосовуватися в 1990-ті роки. Сам Дерріда в своїх працях відводить перекладові провідну роль і в численних публікаціях експліцитно обговорює його значення.
