Коли йдеться про напрям в усному та письмовому перекладі, мають на увазі спрямованість перенесення смислу, тобто, здійснюється переклад з першої, рідної або домінуючої мови перекладача чи на неї. Однак у сучасному перекладознавстві цей термін зазвичай позначає ситуації, коли перекладачі перекладають (усно чи письмово) іноземною мовою. Для позначення такого виду діяльності в перекладознавстві не бракує термінів, таких як «тема» (le thẻme) (Ladmiral 1979), «службовий переклад» (service translation) (Newmark 1988), «інверсивний переклад» (inverse translation) (Beeby 1996), «реверсивний переклад» (reverse translation), «переклад другою мовою» (translation into the second language) (Campbell 1998), «переклад мовою, що не є первинною для перекладача» (translation into thenon-primary language) (Grosman et al. 2000), «переклад нерідною мовою» (translation into a non-mother tongue) (Pokorn 2005) та «переклад A – Б» (translation A – B) (Kelly et al. 2003: 33 – 42).
