As abordagens etnográficas aplicadas ao estudo da tradução têm vindo a registar uma tendência crescente, sobretudo nos últimos anos. Quem faz investigação no campo dos Estudos de Tradução reconhece a versatilidade da etnografia, enquanto abordagem e método de investigação, para uma exploração das práticas tradutórias no sentido mais lato, em áreas tão diversificadas como a interpretação médica (Angelelli 2000), procedimentos para requerentes de asilo (Inghilleri 2003), tradução na Comissão Europeia e no Parlamento Europeu (Koskinen 2008) ou ainda tradução literária (Flynn 2007). Acresce o facto de que a etnografia é apresentada como uma abordagem viável aos Estudos de Tradução (Wolf 2002). Os teóricos da tradução têm-se dedicado ao estudo das práticas de tradução na etnografia clássica e em outras etnografias mais recentes a partir de uma perspetiva interna, isto é, dos Estudos de Tradução (Sturge 1997, 2007; Bachmann Medick 2006).
