国際ニュースの取材や制作における言語（知識）とジャーナリズムの関係は、言語学（談話研究、文体論、語用論）あるいはコミュニケーション学に関する研究の周辺でしばしば論じられてきた。しかし、上記の相互関係におけるプロセスであり産物でもある翻訳の固有のあり方に関心が向けられるようになったのは、比較的最近のことである。翻訳とメディア、あるいはメディアにおける翻訳という幅広い研究分野は、様々な下位分野に分けられる。ファン・ドースレア(van Doorslaer 2009)は、最近の研究をデータとして量的に分析し、この研究分野における関心の中心が、主に 視聴覚翻訳 、 ボイスオーバーと吹き替え 、字幕といった下位分野に集中していることを示した。これらの下位分野においては、メディア翻訳のジャーナリズム的な側面や、日常的なジャーナリズムの実践における翻訳のあり方は、明確な研究対象とされてこなかった。
