يشير مصطلح ترجمة لغة الإشارة (SLI) بفهومه النمطي إلى الترجمة من لغة الإشارة وإليها إما من لغة منطقوقة أو من لغة إشارة أخرى. إلا أن النموذج المتعارف عليه هو الترجمة من لغة منطوقة إلى لغة الإشارة، ونشير هنا إلى أن لغات الإشارة تعتبر لغات تنشأ تلقائياً وبشكل مستقل على اللغات المنطوقة. وهناك أيضاً عملية تسمى بالترجمة الرمزية، بحيث يتم ترميز اللغة المنطوقة حرفياً ونقلها بحركات الأيدي، ولكن هذه العملية تختلف عن الترجمة من لغة الإشارة الطبيعية وإليها.
