C’est au cours des années 1970 qu’on assiste à l’essor des approches fonctionnalistes [Functionalist approaches] de la traduction. Les théories linguistiques précédentes, qui ont prévalu entre les années 1950 et le milieu des années 1970, envisageaient essentiellement la traduction comme un transfert sémantique et tentaient d’expliquer les méthodes permettant d’accomplir l’équivalence entre le texte cible et le texte source. En revanche, dans les approches fonctionnalistes, le principe directeur s’avère l’objectif que doit atteindre le texte cible auprès de ses destinataires de la culture cible. On considère donc essentiellement la traduction comme une forme d’action humaine à la fois contextualisée et culturelle. Les approches fonctionnalistes ont été fondées en Allemagne, particulièrement par Hans Vermeer (1978) (théorie du skopos), puis approfondies entre autres par Hönig et Kußmaul (1982), Nord (1997) et Reiss et Vermeer (1984).
