La nation est un concept qui pose énormément problème. Gellner propose d’appréhender cette notion sur les plans culturel et volontariste (2006 : 6 et 7) tout en admettant que chacun présente des lacunes. Il précise également qu’on peut uniquement définir les nations en fonction de la période nationaliste (‘‘nations can only be defined in the age of nationalism’’ 2006 : 54; notre traduction). D’ailleurs, les langues constituent un facteur déterminant la création de ces dernières depuis longtemps, même si le construit de la nation moderne s’avère un produit récent de la société européenne. Dans un même ordre d’idées, malgré la modernité de la traductologie en tant que discipline, la contribution de l’activité traductionnelle à la constitution d’empires ne date pas d’hier (Robinson 1997 : 9). De fait, les peuples égyptien, grec, romain, arabe, chinois et ottoman, notamment, ont assuré le rayonnement de leur nation par l’entremise de la traduction à mesure que les conquêtes militaires et, par la suite, les échanges commerciaux permettaient à leur empire respectif de s’étendre (voir Scientific Translation).
