Чи можна сказати, що музика хіп-хоп – це різновид усної «літератури»? Чи можна вважати переклади belles infid è les [фр. «прекрасні невірні»] епохи класицизму у Франції «перекладами», або ж краще ставитися до них як до форми «адаптації»? Чи варто класифікувати, скажімо, португальські або ж нідерландські субтитри до екранізації «Олівера Твіста» Романом Поланським у 2005 році як «художній переклад»? І вже певно, що обидва поняття, які стоять поруч у заголовку цієї статті, «художня література» та «переклад», викликають сумнозвісні труднощі при визначенні. Подібно до «Шістьох персонажів у пошуках автора» Луїджі Піранделло , науки літературознавства та перекладознавства, кожна по своєму, а іноді й однаково, витрачають чимало енергії в пошуках рамок власного предмету, який і має бути сенсом їх існування.
